Death notice

Loon Lake — Andy Nicoll was born March 11, 1936, to Andrew G. and Loretta Connors Nicoll in South Troy, NY. He passed away on March 23, 2024. Andy had eight siblings, Tom, Joe, Don, Paul, John, Doris, Mary, and RuthAnn, all deceased but RuthAnn. He attended Troy High School and then enlisted in the US Air Force. He was stationed at McChord AFB in Tacoma, WA until his discharge in 1959. While in Tacoma, he met Peggy Jones; they were married for 17 years and had three sons, Mark (dec), Steven, and Andrew. Andy then married Nancy Zupan; they were together for 20 years and had a daughter together, Leslie. Andy met the Raftis family when he bought their house in 1967. He and Carolyn Raftis met again in 1995 and eventually married in 2000. Carolyn and Andy spent 29 years together. Andy became the “adequate substitute” father for Jerry Raftis (who deemed Andy to be so) to his five children, Mike, Julie, Trish, Megan, and Kyle. Andy had numerous beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Andy worked at the Crescent Department Store in downtown Spokane from 1966 - 1989, mostly in men’s wear and sportswear. He then worked at Spokane Community College coordinating sports travel and making lifelong friends from 1989 until he retired in 2016 (at 80 years old!). Andy was an avid runner, golfer, and snow skier. Andy ran two ultra-marathons; one of his favorite races was the 2-day Jasper to Banff relay in Canada with the Spokane Nooners. On any given weekend during the past 30 years, you could find Andy taking big wide turns on the slopes of Mt. Spokane or 49 Degrees North (in winter), or any area golf course (in summer). He loved his Monday nights at the Eagles with his buddies. He also loved traveling in the motorhome with Carolyn. Together they traveled from Alaska to New York in the “Minnie Winnie”. Everyone who knew Andy knew that he was the life of the party. He loved life, he loved people, and he loved to party! Andy requested no service. Any donations to ARC Spokane in his name would be appreciated.
